Economic Bubbles may Break – Is anything different Today?

authorOurManyAngles February 7, 2010

The financial crisis dejour – throughout history, markets have experienced a crowd mentality. The more excited a market becomes, the more people want to buy in, and the higher the prices are driven.

This mindset has occured throughout history and the cycles can be analyzed consistently. Professor Greg Watson teaches entrepreneurial marketing and the role in the market economy. Regardless of whether we want to analyze recent credit markets which have Broke, these fluctuations are not new. They have consistently occurred throughout time.

One of the most talked about historical markets that burst was Amsterdam’s Tuplip market. We can consider the Tulipmania of the tulip market that burst in 1637 as a popularly known historical account of a market that overheated.

Tulips were originally brought from Turkey in the early 16th century. As new “varieties” of tulips were introduced, competition intensified and their prices soared. One apparently rare variety was the Semper Augustus which reached prices in excess of 1,000 florins per single bulb in 1623. That price was more than six times the average annual wage.

This market mania continued – and ten years later the price had risen another ten fold. At the market peak, the value of a single Semper Augustus tulip bulb reached 10,000 florins – the equivalent of what it cost to purchase a house in the middle of Amsterdam at the time.

With time the market peaked and there was no-one remaining who still wanted to buy these tulips at such high prices. Within weeks, the market value crashed and thousands of people were left in financial ruin.

Throughout time – we have observed similar bubbles develop. As the crowd continues to get more hyped, those contrary views become less and less popular to be heard. Are any of the recent market bubbles any different? In modern times of politically correct speech, are the contrarian voices that speak up for character, ethics, and honesty any different? Throughout time, these contrarian voices have been denigrated and ignored. But the market for products and the market for principles has a way of always correcting itself from the heat of the crowd mentality – and those polar views tend to have their bubbles burst as the required correction occurs. Today’s market is no different.

CSS web design

Web style sheets have been around for a number of years, but their power and importance went largely unnoticed since few implementations existed. Web Designers, anxious to add creativity to their pages by influencing the presentation, began to use Netscape’s proprietary extensions rather than the more powerful style sheets. This was quite natural, since Netscape’s proprietary extensions could be seen by a significant portion of Web users, while few would see style sheet enhancements.

Today, more and more browsers are implementing style sheets, opening authors’ eyes to unique features that allow influence over web design while preserving platform independence. The advantages of style sheets became apparent, as did the disadvantages of continually creating more HTML tags for presentation effects.

Netscape’s BODY attributes are now widely accepted on the Web, and have become standardized in HTML 3.2. Yet BGCOLOR, TEXT and friends simply do not provide the flexibility of style sheets. Most background images would leave a page unreadable to someone whose display only offered 16 colors; many pages are difficult to read with only 256 colors. With conventional BODY attributes, a web designer must choose whether the benefits of a background image outweigh the costs; with style sheets, an author can offer a number of different images, in different style sheets, so that the user can choose the “24-bit style sheet” or “8-bit style sheet,” depending on how many colors his or her system can display. If no author-supplied style suits the user, he or she can simply ignore the web designer’s style.

Style sheets can make an author’s life much easier. While one could use <HR WIDTH=”75%” SIZE=5 ALIGN=center> for every horizontal rule, this becomes very cumbersome for the web designer. With style sheets, one only needs to specify such presentational preferences once, and the style can be applied to an entire site. And if the author decides that WIDTH=”50%” would be better, then he or she only needs to change this preference in one place, rather than having to search through hundreds of pages to change the HTML. Not only that, but style sheets also reduce download time when one file contains all the style information.

Style sheets also offer much more flexibility in terms of the presentation effects that they provide. Properties such as color, background, margin, border, and many more can be applied to all elements. With just HTML and its proprietary extensions, one must rely on attributes like BGCOLOR, which are only available for a few elements. Style sheets give the flexibility of applying a style to all paragraphs, or all level-two headings, or all emphasized text.

With style sheets, authors can use the text-indent property to indent text, rather than resorting to ugly kludges like <DD> or <IMG SRC=”blank.gif” WIDTH=10 ALT=”"> that carry with them many negative side-effects. Margins can be suggested without having to put the entire page in a table. Style sheets also reduce the need for multi-file search and replace; if an author decides to change the indentation of all paragraphs on a site, he or she only has to change one line on a style sheet.

Style sheets represent an enormous step forward for web design. With the separation of content and presentation between HTML and style sheets, the Web no longer needs to drift away from the strong ideal of platform independence that provided the medium with its initial push of popularity. Web designers can finally influence the presentation of documents without leaving pages unreadable to users.

N.O. Saints Watches – Watches for the New Orleans Saints – New Orleans Saints Watches

The New Orleans Saints are a pro American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints play football in the NFC South in the National Football League.

The Saints were built in 1967 as an expansion team and played their home games at Tulane Stadium through 1974. They went more than a decade before they managed to finish a season with a .500 record, 2 full decades before having a winning season, and over 40 years before making it to the Super Bowl. The Saints’ first successful years were from 1987–1992, when the team made the playoffs four times and had winning records in the non-playoff seasons. In the 2000 season, the Saints beat the then-defending Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams for the team’s first playoff win.

The Saints’ 2009 season was the team’s best season. The 11-30-09 Monday Night Football game against the New England Patriots, the game in which the Saints went to an 11–0 record for the first time in franchise history, was the second highest rated cable program to date. After becoming 13–0 with their win against the Atlanta Falcons, it marked the Saints’ best start to a season in its franchise’s history. The result clinched an NFC playoff berth, a bye in the first round of the playoffs. By winning their first 13 games, the Saints furthermore established the record for the longest undefeated season opening (13-0) by an NFC team since the AFL–NFL merger, eclipsing the previous record (12-0) held by the 1985 Chicago Bears. The team advanced to the 2009 NFC Championship game where they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in overtime, sending the team to their first Super Bowl appearance in the franchise’s history.

Geothermal Energy and Its Impact in the Power Race

authorOurManyAngles February 4, 2010

Geothermal energy is somewhat of an unknown entity in the average person’s knowledge of alternative power sources. For a brief language lesson, geothermal from the Greek words “geo” and “therme” mean earth’s heat. The interior of the Earth is made from molten rock and what geothermal energy does is capture the heat under the Earth’s crust to create a power source.

Picture the center of the Earth. It is so hot that it can melt rock quite easily. Well, as you go down into the Earth’s crust, the temperatures get higher and higher. It is estimated that for approximately every forty yards (not quite half the length of a football field), the temperature rises about thirty-four degrees Fahrenheit. What happens is that the heated rocks below the Earth’s surface heat up water to create steam. Holes are then drilled into these specific geothermal regions so that the steam can escape

During the process the geothermal power station drills the holes mentioned above and creates an injection well where cold water is pumped down the well. This cold water filters through the hot rocks and then pressure is used to bring the water back up. Once the hot water reaches the surface, it turns into the steam, which is then harnessed for power. Well, that steam is cleaned and filtered and then used to power turbines, which in turn provide an electric power source.

The advantages of geothermal energy

When a power station harnesses geothermal power in the correct manner, there are no by-products, which are harmful to the environment. Environmentalists should be happy about that! There is also no consumption of any type of fossil fuels. In addition, geothermal energy does not output any type of greenhouse effect. After the construction of a geothermal power plant, there is little maintenance to contend with. In terms of energy consumption, a geothermal power plant is self-sufficient. Another advantage to geothermal energy is that the power plants do not have to be huge which is great for protecting the natural environment.

The disadvantages of geothermal energy

There are several disadvantages to geothermal energy. First of all, you can’t just build a geothermal power plant in some vacant land plot somewhere. The area where a geothermal energy power plant would be built would consist of those suitable hot rocks at just the right depth for drilling. In addition, the type of rock must be easy to drill into. It is important to take care of a geothermal site because if the holes were drilled improperly, then potentially harmful minerals and gas could escape from under ground. These hazardous materials are nearly impossible to get rid of properly. Pollution may occur due to improper drilling at geothermal stations. Believe it or not, but it is possible for a specific geothermal area to run dry or lose steam.

Alternative uses for geothermal energy

Besides power resources, geothermal energy can be harnessed for other means as well. Thanks to geothermal water, there are natural hot springs all over the world and many people enjoy the warm waters and its restorative effects. Geothermal water can also be beneficial for growing agricultural product

Contents in a greenhouse within a cold or icy climate. Geothermal waters can be harnessed to create space heating in buildings or even to keep streets and sidewalks warm enough to prevent icing over. Several cities have actually used geothermal energy in this unique manner.

Because geothermal energy is reliable and renewable, this alternative power source will start to enjoy more growth. However, just remember that geothermal energy will not necessarily be available in many areas due to its volatile needs. Areas like California, Iceland, Hawaii and Japan are just a few places where geothermal energy is being used, many due to earthquakes and the underground volcanic activity.

1 Week Marketing Method Review: this is a wonderful business plan

I am not the first nor will I be the last one to have a candid One Week Marketing Review.

This online marketing business plan is different than others I have seen. Most others make wild accusations about instant success and that without their program; you will not stand a chance. No such claims here.

Looking at the different steps, this business program shows signs of being used before. Each step follow directly from the last in a well thought out and orchestrated line of thought. Even if mistakes are made there are steps to recover from them.

I did find another name this business plan goes by and that is One Week Marketing Action Plan. That really describes this successful business plan. But as far as I can tell this business plan will work as promised as long as the marketer is proactive and does the work. (TIP:  Be sure to check out the great One Week Marketing bonus available.

The name of this business plan fits it correctly. There are steps to follow each and every day. What was nice is that this business plan was implemented before it was sold to the public. This became evident when there were steps included on what to do when the cyber world has an attitude.

Unlike the business world of years past were everything was on a hard copy. If something came up missing, it was just misplaced or thrown out. But there was a reason and a way to recover it. With the way the cyber world functions, some things just do disappear and nothing can be done about it.

This plan does show you how to recover for that but there are no software glitches in this plan. The main reason is that the software used is the operator. No preprogrammed software to mess up or malfunction. This plan I like. It takes action and input by the user to work. No guess work about downloading a program and hoping it is compatible with your system.

This is like an eBook. You must read and follow directions to implement this One Week Marketing Plan. Review is positive and worth the small amount of money that is needed for the purchase.

Refrigeration system history

In 1758, Benjamin Franklin and John Hadley, professor of chemistry at Cambridge University, conducted an experiment to explore the principle of evaporation as a means to rapidly cool an object. Franklin and Hadley confirmed that evaporation of highly volatile liquids such as alcohol and ether, could be used to drive down the temperature of an object past the freezing point of water. They conducted their experiment with the bulb of a mercury thermometer as their object and with a bellows used to “quicken” the evaporation; they lowered the temperature of the thermometer bulb down to 7°F while the ambient temperature was 65°F.

Franklin noted that soon after they passed the freezing point of water (32°F) a thin film of ice formed on the surface of the thermometer’s bulb and that the ice mass was about a quarter inch thick when they stopped the experiment upon reaching 7°F. Franklin concluded, “From this experiment, one may see the possibility of freezing a man to death on a warm summer’s day”

In 1805, American inventor Oliver Evans designed but never built a refrigeration system based on the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle rather than chemical solutions or volatile liquids such as ethyl ether.

In 1820, the British scientist Michael Faraday liquefied ammonia and other gases by using high pressures and low temperatures.

An American living in Great Britain, Jacob Perkins, obtained the first patent for a vapor-compression refrigeration system in 1834. Perkins built a prototype system and it actually worked, although it did not succeed commercially.

In 1842, an American physician, John Gorrie, designed the first system for refrigerating water to produce ice. He also conceived the idea of using his refrigeration system to cool the air for comfort in homes and hospitals (i.e., air-conditioning). His system compressed air, then partially cooled the hot compressed air with water before allowing it to expand while doing part of the work required to drive the air compressor. That isentropic expansion cooled the air to a temperature low enough to freeze water and produce ice, or to flow “through a pipe for effecting refrigeration otherwise” as stated in his patent granted by the U.S. Patent Office in 1851. Gorrie built a working prototype, but his system was a commercial failure.

Alexander Twining began experimenting with vapor-compression refrigeration in 1848 and obtained patents in 1850 and 1853. He is credited with having initiated commercial refrigeration in the United States by 1856.

Widespread commercial refrigeration use

By the 1870s breweries had become the largest users of commercial refrigeration units, though some still relied on harvested ice. Though the ice-harvesting industry had grown immensely by the turn of the 20th century, pollution and sewage had begun to creep into natural ice making it a problem in the metropolitan suburbs. Eventually breweries began to complain of tainted ice. This raised demand for more modern and consumer-ready refrigeration and ice-making machines. In 1895, German engineer Carl von Linde set up a large-scale process for the production of liquid air and eventually liquid oxygen for use in safe household refrigerators.

Refrigerated railroad cars were introduced in the US in the 1840s for the short-run transportation of dairy products. In 1867 J.B. Sutherland of Detroit, Michigan patented the refrigerator car designed with ice tanks at either end of the car and ventilator flaps near the floor which would create a gravity draft of cold air through the car.

By 1900 the meat packing houses of Chicago had adopted ammonia-cycle industrial refrigeration. By 1914 almost every location used artificial refrigeration. The big meat packers, Armour, Swift, and Wilson, had purchased the most expensive units which they installed on train cars and in branch houses and storage facilities in the more remote distribution areas.

It was not until the middle of the 20th century that refrigeration units were designed for installation on tractor-trailer rigs (trucks or lorries). Refrigerated vehicles are used to transport perishable goods, such as frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, and temperature-sensitive chemicals. Most modern refrigerators keep the temperature between -40 and +20 °C and have a maximum payload of around 24 000 kg. gross weight (in Europe).

The Importance of Staff Satisfaction and Exit questionnaires

authorOurManyAngles February 3, 2010

With the need for many organizations to be more streamlined and productive a business can sometimes find itself with groups of employees working under pressure that if not addressed could then lead to low moral and a high turnover of staff. The benefits of a company having a highly motivated workforce can be considerable and having a workforce that is both motivated and productive should not be regarded as being mutually exclusive to one another.

When problems are left unresolved then there is a risk of companies alienating their employees leading to employee frustrations growing to a point where managers find that they are on the back foot with problems that just cannot be ignored.

Ideally employers would allocate the time to fully understand the needs of their employees and learn from their experiences of working on the front line, but employers are too often themselves tied up with the day to day task of fighting their own fires.

Online surveys provide employers with an affordable and efficient method to automate the process of collating the information and storing it in a format that allows for real-time analysis there by helping the management towards the goals of achieving staff satisfaction and high productivity.

Dissatisfied & unproductive

There are a plethora of reasons why employees may become dissatisfied with their job that can result in them channelling their frustrations into demands for higher salaries and reduced hours. Managers who tackle these issues head on, making it all about salary and hours, will often find themselves dealing with the symptoms and not the root cause.

It’s not just about the money

The following are the most common problems to achieving productivity, none of which are likely to be resolved by increasing salaries or reducing hours:-

  • Inadequate training
  • Out of touch management
  • Out of date working methods
  • Lack of proper tools and equipment

Increasing salaries is not always a solution to employees’ problems nor as many studies have revealed is it the most important motivator for most employees.

Take the case of a single mother who is juggling a full time job with the need to look after two children. Out of frustration she may demand more money so that she feels that she is able to cope where a better solution, for both her and the company, may be more flexible working hours.

Good communications is what it is about

It is in any organization’s interest to encourage communication. A company that makes communication between personnel and management difficult, or that takes the view that if personnel have a problem they will say something, can often delude themselves into thinking their workforce is content when it is not. It can take only one aggrieved employee with one small problem for an entire workforce to develop a destructive ‘them and us’ attitude.

Improving communication

It would be ideal if the employer and employee could meet one on one but in practice this is impractical for everyone except very small organizations.

Meetings between management and worker representatives are good in theory but can often spiral into becoming talking shops and losing their purpose as both sides become more familiar with one another and the meetings run the risk of being hijacked by the more extreme personalities.

Suggestion boxes can be useful but can be viewed as token efforts by management as they wait for personnel to highlight a problem.

Newsletters can provide a positive contribution, but their purpose is generally to inform and not discuss employee issues.

Maintaining the initiative

Conducting employee satisfaction surveys on a regular basis you are able to ask each employee specific questions and present a pro-active management initiative where the whole workforce can be consulted on various issues. Surveys are able to provide a level playing field between the quieter and more vocal employees.

Consultation should not be seen as a sign of weakness, a confident manager will often take counsel from others before making a decision. By retaining the initiative and conducting a survey the employer is able to tackle problems from a position of strength as opposed to waiting for problems to arise and develop out of proportion.

If a small problem is left unresolved it could lead to a situation where a minor problem might just break the camel’s back and the mood of the employees change from positive to negative in a blink of an eye.

Easy and quick

For most companies online surveys represent a proactive and low cost solution. For the majority of organizations where most of the personnel have desktop computers making online surveys quick to design and quick to deploy direct to the individual.

In situations where individuals do not have personal access to a computer there are still many options available to implement the online survey solution such as giving access to a shared computer, operator input or, as a last resort, a hardcopy survey.

Job satisfaction

There are many elements that go towards providing an employee with job satisfaction, from the working environment, working methodology, working ethos, company ethics to having good and effective management. Job satisfaction brings benefits through improved motivation and productivity from a workforce that feels that they are treated as individuals and not a commodity item.

Educate and inform

An online survey can also be used to educate and pass on to the workforce important information, the ‘message’ is consistently delivered and does not suffer from the Chinese whisper phenomenon where a message can be distorted as it is handed down.

An online survey can explain to the employees a difficult situation and get useful feedback as to the best solution. It is rare in this situation that the workforce would appear negative and more likely that they will feel informed and empowered that might in itself turn a potentially negative problem into a positive challenge that unites the workforce.

Exit surveys

Exit surveys are an excellent way of ensuring that when personnel leave an organisation they are leaving for the right reasons and not due to reasons that if appreciated earlier could have been addressed and resolved by management. Although identifying a problem may not prevent a person leaving, having identified a problem it can then be addressed and that may be enough to prevent other key personnel from leaving.
